Marriage Protection Amendment

Two years ago, there was an effort by some law-makers in the United States Congress to amend the Constitution of the United States to define marriage as only the union of a man and a woman. Unfortunately, that effort was not successful and many states have or are now in the process of enacting laws that says otherwise. It is our understanding that the Resolution is going to be revisited again this June.

Bishop Skylstad, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in a letter he wrote in March to all U.S. Bishops, urging all Catholics to support this proposal, had this to say. "There is a growing sense shared by many people, including a wide range of religious leaders that a Marriage Protection Amendment is the only federal-level action that ultimately will protect and preserve the institution of marriage."

It is important to note what the Church teaches regarding the Sacrament of Marriage, that marriage is sacred, ordained by God to be the union of a man and a woman, exclusive and life-long, for the good of the spouses and the procreation of children and therefore must be protected. And so to make marriage anything else would be to further weaken the family, the very foundation of our human society.

The Knights of Columbus, being the pro-marriage, pro-family organization that it is, has generously offered to provide to all Diocese in the country pre-printed post-cards that can used for writing our representatives in the United States Senate. These postcards can be downloaded from their website http://www.kofc.org. New York Catholics can also access the New York State Catholic Conference website http://www.nyscatholic.org to send e-mails to Senators Charles Schumer and Hilary Clinton to voice their support to protect the family, to protect the sanctity of marriage.
