St. Martin de Porres

St. Martin de Porres (1579-1639).
Feast Day is November 3.

St. Martin lived at the Dominican monastery in Lima, Peru where he did the laundry. His father was a Spanish nobleman and his mother a free black. They lived in poverty as his father deserted them and his sister.

Tradition has it that the mice were destroying the clothing of the monks in the monastery where St. Martin did the laundry. He talked to the mice and provided food for them in a corner of the garden, thereby avoiding any harm to the mice and solving the problem. Children will delight at seeing the two Peruvian mice at the base of the statue.

This bronze statue is located outside the main doors of the church.
